I Can Do Hard Things

To make the local high school girl’s soccer team you have to be able to run the mile in 6:45.  (That’s six minutes and 45 seconds people!)  I know this because my daughter played on the team and passing the 6:45 test scared the running shoes off her every year.

One year a seasoned teammate gave her some wise running advice.  “While you run tell yourself, ‘I am strong.  I am fast. I am powerful.’  Repeat it over and over in your mind.  Don’t let anything negative creep in.”

It worked for my daughter.  She shared that little “secret” with me and now I repeat the phrase in my mind.  Along with other positive things.

Today I tied my neon shoe laces and climbed on the treadmill.  It was HARD.  My lungs felt like cement bricks.  My arms burned.  I had to either slow the pace or jump to the side for a rest several times.  But I did not give up.  I held my clicker and filled my mind with positivity.

I am strong

I am fast

I am powerful

I don’t quit

I am a finisher

I set goals

I am an achiever

I am strong

I am fast

I am powerful

Each phrase equaled a click.  Sometimes I would click as I counted down the seconds before completing an interval.  Sometimes I would click as I thought of people I love.  I clicked my footsteps a couple of times.  Clicking helped me finish the workout.   (…and I even added clicks for push ups at the end!)

It felt good to remind myself that…

I will admit, my mile wasn’t anything near 6:45 today – and it never will be.  But I did what I could do.   And just look at the clicks I earned while doing it!

Think. Click. Be…

a finisher.

Great advise from your daughters friend! My first experiences paying attention to my thoughts happened during my attempt to become a runner. The power of those running experiences led me to believe I could do natural birth…a very hard thing and many more hard things.

That was our family theme this summer. We challenged our kids to do hard things….one of them was run a marathon over the summer (so it meant a mile 4 times a week for 2 months) and they did it. I was so proud of the. It’s true that positive mental “I am strong, I can do hard things” gets you through so much!
